Remembering the Disco King: Bappi Lahiri.
The Disco King Bappi Lahiri was born as Alokesh Lahiri in a Bengali family in Kolkata on March 3, 1950. He took the Indian music industry by storm in the 80s decade by adding disco music to his songs.
Bappi Lahiri had a vast career, spanning over five decades in which he composed over 5000 songs for more than 500 movies. He got his first opportunity in a Bengali film named Daadu (1974).
The song named as Jimmy Jimmy by Bappi Lahiri was released in 1981, and became an instant hit. The song also featured actor Mithun Chakraborty who went on to become one of most renowned actors of India. After achieving success with disco music, Bappi Lahiri started composing other genres of music as well such as rock n roll, pop, folk and ghazals.
Another song of Bappi Lahiri Yaad Aa Rahi Hai is hummed years later too. His versatility ensured that he remained relevant throughout his career which spanned over five decades!
In 2017, he was awarded with the Banga Bhushan by the Government of West Bengal. He was also awarded with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in the year 2018. The legend passed away on February 15th 2022 at the age of 69.
